The South Devon Salon of International Photography 2018

Chairman's Notes

Our 7th International Salon is now over, and, as I write this for our website, which contains all of the acceptances, together with the medal and award winners, for the seven years, the 2018 printed catalogue is being produced.  We then start work on our 8th Salon!

Disappointingly, the number of entrants was down this year, but the standard of entries was good to high. In previous years our selectors have criticised the poor quality, or over-use, of HDR images, and it was noticeable that this year the use of HDR was well managed to improve an image. The other perennial criticism has always been about the use, or rather misuse, of nudes in images, and this year was no different...if a naked woman or man is your focal point then there should be a purpose to it. That said there were some very good and artistic nudes on display this year with exceptional lighting.

I think the biggest change we noticed this year in the Open colour and mono sections was the large amount of sports images entered. Many of these were very well done and deserved their marks. The mono section was again well supported with some excellent images showing great use of lighting.

My own favourite has always been the Creative section, but I have to agree with one of our selectors who commented I was perhaps a little disappointed in the Creative section.  Some of the ideas were good and certainly had humour but they were not quite there technically.  The images that gained the higher marks certainly  deserved their awards and I certainly admired the work that went into them.

The Nature section has some exceptional work but again is lacking in Flora... where are your flower images?

My congratulations go to Phil Barber who wins the FIAP blue badge for most acceptances with us for the third year incredible achievement!

My thanks go to you, the photographers, for showing us your images. If you didn't win an acceptance this time don't give up...another Salon with different selectors may give a different outcome.

As usual my heartfelt thanks go to our selectors who did a fabulous job this year and made it one of the best experiences over the two days of selection that we have had, to Alan Boothman (our club legend) who runs the technical side on selection days and the Salon website, and to our small but trusty team of club members.. Lynn, Garnett, Phil, Gordon, Chris and Christina. And we couldn't do it without The Dolphin Hotel, Bovey Tracey, where we takeover the ballroom for two days, and who provide sustenance in all of it's forms.
