Guest Speaker:  Martyn Warren

“James Ravilious, Street Photographer of the Countryside”.  From 1972-1999 James Ravilious (1939-1999) was photographer-in-residence at Beaford Arts in North Devon. The physical, cultural and aesthetic aspects of the area were central to his work, and the photographs that he produced reflect his deep empathy with the people who lived and worked around him. With his natural and direct style with un-posed, usually unaware subjects, caught ‘on the fly’ and often with wry humour, Ravilious shares many of the characteristics that define the urban ‘street photographer’, and is worthy of consideration alongside some of the celebrated urban observers of Britain in the twentieth century. After exploring this theme, this talk will elaborate on the work currently being undertaken by Beaford Arts, with the help of the Heritage Lottery Fund and numerous sponsors, to conserve and catalogue the 70,000-plus negatives in the Ravilious archive, and to digitize and make accessible all his contact sheets and 10,000 of his photographs. http://www.martynwarren.co.uk
