Newton Abbot Photographic Club was established over seventy years ago and currently has 59 members from Newton Abbot and the surrounding area of South Devon.

We are keen to welcome new members, whether you are an experienced photographer or a complete beginner.

Join us for photography, fun, and fellowship, while we learn to make the best pictures we can. You are welcome to attend two meetings as a guest before deciding to join.

This salon is for digitally projected images only and entries must be submitted on line using the Newton Abbot Photographic Club website and following the link to the Salon tab (www.newtonabbot-photoclub.org.uk) along with the appropriate fee via Paypal. Entries will NOT be accepted on CD or by email. Entrants MUST use only the Western/Latin alphabet when submitting an entry...note NO umlauts, accents or cedillas.

By entering this exhibition, you are explicitly consenting to the personal details you have supplied, including email addresses, being held, processed and used by the exhibition organizers for purposes associated with this exhibition. You also explicitly consent to such information being sent to organizations which have accorded official recognition, patronage or accreditation to this exhibition. You acknowledge and accept that entering this exhibition means that the status and results of your entry may be made public.

NOTICE: When an entrant fills in the Entry Form to submit an entry the entrant will see a feature to affirm he or she has read these Conditions of Entry when he or she fills out the entry form.  If the entrant does not so affirm the entry will not be submitted.

1)The exhibition is open to anyone; however, an entry may be rejected when the sponsoring organization or its agent, in its reasonable discretion, believes the entry does not conform to the exhibition rules and conditions.An entrant’s images will not be presented to the judges consecutively. An entrant’s four images will be distributed throughout four rounds of judging in that section. Distribution of images shall be in the same round order as submitted by the entrant.

Entries must originate as photographs (image-captures of objects via light sensitivity) made by the entrant on photographic emulsion or acquired digitally. By virtue of submitting an entry, the entrant certifies the work as his own (aliases are not permitted). The entrant permits the sponsors to reproduce all or part of the entered material free of charge for publication and/or display in media related to the exhibition. This may include low resolution posting on a website. Note: Entrants who indicate that their images may not be reproduced or used “will not be eligible for awards” or inclusion in audio-visuals of the exhibition “and could be subject to disqualification” by the exhibition sponsors.

The exhibition assumes no liability of any misuse of copyright.  Images may be altered, either electronically or otherwise, by the maker. All parts of the image must have been photographed by the author who is holding the copyright of all works submitted.  All final work must be on photographic film, or on electronic file, or on photographic or electronic print material, mounting excepted. 

No title or identification of the maker shall be visible anywhere on the face of an image, print mat or mount entered in a PSA Recognized exhibition.

Each image must have a unique title. Once an image has been accepted in a PSA Recognized exhibition, that same image, or a like “in camera” or a “reproduction” duplicate of that image:

i. May not be entered or re-entered in any section of the same Division Star Ratings class in that exhibition regardless of media, format, or title.
ii. May not be re-titled for entry in any other PSA Recognized exhibition, including translation into another language.
iii. Images meeting the Monochrome Definition and non-manipulated color images from the same capture shall be considered the same image and must be given the same title.
Words such as "Untitled" and "No Title" are not acceptable as part or all of an image's title, nor are camera capture filenames.
An image may be entered in only one section where acceptances of that image in multiple sections would be eligible for the same star path.

2) The Salon will consist of four Digital projected sections: Open Colour (PID Colour), Open Mono PID Mono), Creative/Altered Reality (PID Colour) and Nature. An entrant may submit a maximum of four images in each of the sections and the same image may not be entered into more than one section. An entrants four images will be distributed throughout four rounds of judging in that section.

3) All images and a completed entry form must be submitted online via the Newton Abbot Photographic Club website www.newtonabbot-photoclub.org.uk Each image must be in ‘jpeg’ format and not exceed 2.00Mb.Maximum image size (including any borders) is 1400 pixels horizontally and 1050 pixels vertically. If your image is portrait format it should be no higher than 1050 pixels. Smaller images are acceptable but will be projected smaller on the screen. Projection will be in sRGB colour space and your image should be saved in this format. Entries will be judged on a fully calibrated system using a laptop and Canon SX80 projector for the best definition.

4) We are required as a condition of the FIAP Patronage granted to this exhibition, to publish the following FIAP condition of entry

The mention that by the sole act of submitting his/her images or files to a salon under FIAP Patronage, the entrant accepts without exception and with no objection the following terms:

- that the submitted images can be investigated by FIAP to establish if these obey to FIAP regulations and definitions even if      the entrant is not a member of FIAP,

- that FIAP will use any means at its disposal for this undertaking,

- that any refusal to cooperate with FIAP or any refusal to submit the original files as captured by the camera, or failure to  provide sufficient evidence, will be sanctioned by FIAP,

- that in case of sanctions following the non compliance with FIAP regulations, the name of the entrant will be released in any  form useful to inform the breaches of the rules.
 It is recommended to leave the EXIF data in the submitted files intact in order to ease eventual investigations.
5) We are required, as a condition of the PSA Recognition granted to this exhibition, to publish the following PSA condition of entry:
If at any time, it is determined in the reasonable discretion of the exhibition organizer or the judges before, during, or after the judging of an exhibition that an entrant has submitted entries where one or more images may fail to comply with these Conditions of Entry, including the stated definitions, the exhibition organizers reserve the right to delete the entry from the exhibition and void any or all acceptances or awards in connection with the exhibition. Fees may be forfeited or refunded in these circumstances. The entrant acknowledges that the decision of the exhibition organizers or the judges is final.
In order to ensure that images comply with the Conditions of Entry and definitions, the exhibition organizers may carry out reasonable measures to verify that:

a) the images are the original work of the entrant and

b) the images comply with the rules and definitions as set out in these Conditions of Entry.

These steps include, but are not limited to, questioning any entrant, requiring the submission of RAW files or other digital files representing the original capture of the submitted image(s), confronting the entrant with evidence that one or more submitted images fails to comply with the Conditions of Entry (also known as Entry Rules), and offering the entrant a reasonable opportunity to provide counter evidence to refute the exhibition organizer’s evidence by a set deadline. Such entries that are not cleared or are still questionable after the entrant has presented evidence may be considered in breach of these Conditions of Entry, and declined. Such entries may be referred to PSA for further investigation of possible ethics violations.

PSA retains the right to investigate in any way all complaints/suspicions of breaches of entry conditions, impose sanctions if deemed necessary, void the acceptances of any image found to violate the PSA rules, include the entrant’s name on the list of sanctions provided to Exhibitions, and share such investigations with FIAP. Entrants automatically agree to these terms by the act of entering the Exhibition and agree to cooperate with any investigation.


6) The Entrants name and image title must NOT be visible on the image. No information about the Entrant or country will be given to the selectors.Each image must have a unique title. Once an image has been accepted in a PSA Recognized exhibition, that same image, or a like “in camera” or a “reproduction” duplicate of that image: i. May not be re-entered in any section of the same Division Star Ratings class in that exhibition  regardless of media, format, or title. ii. May not be re-titled for entry in any other PSA Recognized exhibition.  Words such as “Untitled” and “No Title” are not acceptable as part or all of an image’s title, nor are camera capture filenames or titles consisting of only numbers. No title or identification of the maker shall be written anywhere on the face of an image.

7) Files are automatically renamed by upload script, however put your titles on the entry form (with a maximum of 35 characters) as you wish them to appear in the catalogue.

8) Each Entrant will receive a digital report card and a colour printed catalogue featuring all medal winners and highly commended images, plus selected acceptances. Catalogues will be sent by surface mail along with any awards.

9) It is the Entrant’s responsibility to ensure that entry forms are clearly and CORRECTLY completed. Where the organisers consider that this is not the case, they will not accept any responsibility for safe delivery of report cards and catalogues.

10) Any entries submitted without the correct fee will NOT be judged. The organisers will make an effort to alert the entrant to the fact, but it is the Entrant’s obligation to send the correct fee.

11) Images may be altered, either digitally or otherwise, by the maker , but ALL parts of the image must have been photographed by the author who is holding the copyright. Clip Art and Copyright Free materials are NOT acceptable. This does not apply to the Nature Section (see Nature definitions below). All final work must be a digital file.

12) Images entered in the Nature section must comply with the new PSA and FIAP  definitions as listed below. There are changes on these, please read carefully.

13) Entry status: The list of entries received will be published on the website and the status will be updated weekly. Please check the status of your entries on the website, www.newtonabbot-photoclub.org.uk under Salon 2019.

14) An Entrants' images (in each section) will be distributed throughout four rounds of judging.

15) PREVIOUS ACCEPTANCES: Images accepted in previous years South Devon Salon or which, in the opinion of the organisers, are too similar to previously accepted images will not be judged.

16) AWARDS A number of PSA, FIAP and GPU Gold, Silver and Bronze medals will be awarded together with FIAP Ribbons for Selectors top images. A number of South Devon Salon Ribbons will be awarded in each section for Highly Commended entries.The entrant with the highest overall acceptance total will receive the FIAP Blue Badge for Best Author. In all aproximately 100 awards.

Accepted entries will be eligible for FIAP Awards,  the PSA’s “Who’s Who” and Star Ratings (PID & Nature) 

Acceptances in PID recognized Colour sections will be credited towards PID Colour Star Ratings and Who’s Who Colour listings. Acceptances in PID recognized Monochrome sections shall be credited towards PID Monochrome Star Ratings and Who’s Who Monochrome listings.

NOTE :Monochrome images may be entered in PID Color sections but if accepted will only be eligible towards PID Color Star ratings.

Fees should preferably be made through Paypal using either your own Paypal account or by utilising any current credit or debit card. When submitting your entry a new window will open informing you of the fee payable and how to pay and checking your entry details.

In situations where an entry fee can only be sent by post, the Chairman should be contacted for arrangements to be made.

The organisers regret that we cannot be responsible for cash or cheques lost or delayed in the postal system. Entries for which no fee is received, or where the entry fee is paid with foreign cheques or money orders, will not be judged or returned. The organisers will attempt to contact by email any Entrants who omit to pay the correct fee, but accept no responsibility if unable to and the entry is not judged.


PSA Definitions:-

General: The original image must be made by the entrant on photographic emulsion or acquired with a digital camera. All images must be original and may not incorporate elements produced by anyone else. By virtue of submitting an entry, the entrant certifies the work as his own and permits the sponsors to reproduce all or part of the entered material free of charge for publication and/or display in media related to the Exhibition. The Exhibition assumes no liability for any misuse of copyright by the entrant. 

CreativeCreative is "Altered Reality." The image must obviously display a change in natural colour, form, shape, or any combination of these three. High Dynamic Range (HDR) images without further changes are not considered "altered reality."

Mono:  An image is considered to be Monochrome only if it gives the impression of having no color (i.e. contains only shades of gray which can include pure black and pure white) OR it gives the impression of being a grayscale image that has been toned in one color across the entire image. (For example by Sepia, red, gold, etc.)   A grayscale or multi-colored image modified or giving the impression of having been modified by partial toning, multi toning or by the inclusion of spot coloring does not meet the definition of monochrome and shall be classified as a Color Work.

FIAP Definitions

Mono: A black and white work fitting from the very dark grey (black) to the very clear grey (white) is a Monochrome work with the various shades of grey. A black and white work toned entirely in a single colour will remain a Monochrome work able to stand in the black and white category; such a work can be reproduced in black and white in the catalogue of a salon under FIAP Patronage. On the other hand a black and white work modified by a partial toning or by the addition of one colour becomes a colour work (polychrome) to stand in the colour (Open)category; such a work requires colour reproduction in the catalogue of a salon under FIAP Patronage.



Nature Photography Definition

Nature photography is restricted to the use of the photographic process to depict all branches of natural history, except anthropology and archeology, in such a fashion that a well-informed person will be able to identify the subject material and certify its honest presentation. The story telling value of a photograph must be weighed more than the pictorial quality while maintaining high technical quality. Human elements shall not be present, except where those human elements are integral parts of the nature story such as nature subjects, like barn owls or storks, adapted to an environment modified by humans, or where those human elements are in situations depicting natural forces, like hurricanes or tidal waves. Scientific bands, scientific tags or radio collars on wild animals are permissible. Photographs of human created hybrid plants, cultivated plants, feral animals, domestic animals, or mounted specimens are ineligible, as is any form of manipulation that alters the truth of the photographic statement. 
No techniques that add, relocate, replace, or remove pictorial elements except by cropping are permitted. Techniques that enhance the presentation of the photograph without changing the nature story or the pictorial content, or without altering the content of the original scene, are permitted including HDR, focus stacking and dodging/burning. Techniques that remove elements added by the camera, such as dust spots, digital noise, and film scratches, are allowed. Stitched images are not permitted.  All allowed adjustments must appear natural. Color images can be converted to greyscale monochrome. Infrared images, either direct-captures or derivations, are not allowed.
Images used in Nature Photography competitions may be divided in two classes: Nature and Wildlife.
Images entered in Nature sections meeting the Nature Photography Definition above can have landscapes, geologic formations, weather phenomena, and extant organisms as the primary subject matter. This includes images taken with the subjects in controlled conditions, such as zoos, game farms, botanical gardens, aquariums and any enclosure where the subjects are totally dependent on man for food.
Images entered in Wildlife sections meeting the Nature Photography Definition above are further defined as one or more extant zoological or botanical organisms free and unrestrained in a natural or adopted habitat.  Landscapes, geologic formations, photographs of zoo or game farm animals, or of any extant zoological or botanical species taken under controlled conditions are not eligible in Wildlife sections.  Wildlife is not limited to animals, birds and insects. Marine subjects and botanical subjects (including fungi and algae) taken in the wild are suitable wildlife subjects, as are carcasses of extant species.
Wildlife images may be entered in Nature sections of Exhibitions. The (W) must be ticked beside the image download button to show your entry is Wildlife and particularly meets the PSA standard.
All entries shall conform to the stricter of these definitions for acceptances to be validated by all the International Organizations granting recognition or patronage.
