COMPETITIONS

Monthly Sections
Prints, and Digitally projected Images (DPI). There are five monthly rounds in the season, four allowing open entries on any subject, and one having set subjects.

Annual Sections
Colour Print of the Year / Monochrome Print of the Year / Digitally projected Image of the Year. In the Colour Print and DPI Sections, the points gained in the IOY Round will be added to those received in the relevant Monthly Round in the same season, to determine the final scores for the Images of the Year (Colour Print and DPI) awards.

ANNUAL AWARDS

1. The NAPC Photographer of the Year award
is presented to the member who has gained the highest total of points from the monthly competitions of that season, across both sections.

2. Two NAPC Season
awards are made to recognise the season winners for the aggregate points in each of the two monthly sections (Print and DPI).

3. NAPC Image of the Year
awards are made to the winners of each of the three annual sections (Colour Print, Mono Print, and DPI)

4. An NAPC Photographer Recognition
award may also be presented, where the committee determine that a new or existing member, has exhibited notable competition performance, whilst not achieving a major Club award.

COMPETITION RULES

GENERAL

Rule 1 Members must have photographed the entries themselves, including those used in digital work. Copies or derivatives of other people’s work will not be accepted into any competition.

Rule 2 Members may enter TWO prints MAXIMUM. They can be two mono prints OR two colour prints OR one print of each (mono/colour).

Rule 3 Members may enter THREE digitally projected images MAXIMUM. DPI filenames must be designated a, b and c. In the event of a high number of competition entries, digital image c will be withdrawn. The withdrawn image may be entered in subsequent monthly competitions.

Rule 4 There will be five monthly rounds, four with an open theme, and one with set subject(s). There is no time limit as to when the pictures were taken for the Open rounds, but the 2009 AGM determined that “all pictures should have been taken over the past 12 months” in the set subject competition.

Rule 5 Entries must be presented on the dates indicated in the programme.

Rule 6 Judging of the monthly competitions will be by outside judges. The scoring will be out of 10, with points awarded for each image based on its own merit. There will be no monthly outright winners, but acknowledgement will be given for the highest scoring images. All points for all entries will be collated, and the highest aggregate scores in each section, over the five rounds, will be the Season winners.

Rule 7 Any Print or DPI may be submitted for a monthly competition only once. If the image is subsequently produced in a different format it may be submitted once again, but not in the same season.

Rule 8 To be eligible for any competition, the entrant must be a fully subscribed member of Newton Abbot Photographic Club.

Rule 9 Titles are required for Digitally projected Images. Titles are optional but preferred for prints. There must be no names on entries, only the membership number.

Rule 10 All submissions must be accompanied by completed entry forms, downloadable from the Club Website.

RULES SPECIFIC TO PRINTS

1. Entries to be mounted on card (or similar) to a maximum size of 50cm by 40cm including the mount.

2. Framed or glass mounted submissions cannot be accepted.

RULES SPECIFIC TO DIGITALLY PROJECTED IMAGES (DPI)

1. Digitally projected Images may be sourced from either digital camera files, or digitally scanned objects and / or photographic film images.

2. All digital file entries must be submitted on either a memory device with USB plug (Memory-Stick), Compact Flash Card (CF), or compact disc (CD). Only the entered files should be present on the media.

3. All media containing entry files must be placed in the box designated and clearly marked as being for club digital image file competition entries.

4. All media (Memory-Stick, CF, CD) must be clearly marked with both the owner’s name and membership number. Membership numbers, Choice a, b, or c, and Image titles should appear in each filename.

5. Submitted files must be named as your chosen title (max 25 characters), prefixed with your membership number and a letter, a, b, or c, (e.g. 10a Cat in Coal-shed.jpg). Your title should reflect your exact requirements including capitalisation and spaces. The use of a, b, c allows the flexibility to limit entry numbers if ever required.

6. Files must not exceed 1MB, and must be in .jpg format. A 1024x768 jpg image, at quality 11 in Photoshop, will normally be less than 1MB.

7. JPG Files with a format other than 1024 x 768 pixels may be submitted, but these will be subject to automatic resizing when projected. Any area not filled by the re-sampling process will appear black as a default.

8. Files are best provided with exactly 1024 x 768 pixels, in landscape format. All pixels will then be shown by the projector without any further re-sampling or scaling. The actual photographic image content may be of any size, orientation and aspect ratio, at or within this 1024 x 768 pixel file format. The canvas area outside the photographic image will appear as background in the manner / colour chosen.

9. It is also recommended that the pictures be submitted in the sRGB colour space ICC profile, to provide the best colour match to the projector.

RULES SPECIFIC TO IMAGES OF THE YEAR (IOY)

1. Each member may enter a maximum of THREE Prints and THREE Digitally projected Images (DPI). The prints may be two Colour (max) plus one Mono, OR two Mono (max) plus one Colour.

2. In the Colour Print and DPI Sections, the points gained in the IOY Round will be added to those received in the relevant Monthly Round in the same season, to determine the final scores for the Images of the Year (Colour Print and DPI) awards. Images may be reprocessed / improved – e.g. based on the comments of previous judges.

New images may be entered, but will not be eligible for IOY awards in these two sections.

3. The NAPC Image of the Year – Monochrome Print will be awarded on the points received in the IOY Round only, including images either new or previously entered in a monthly competition.
